NATO
NATO is dominated by the US President of the “US committee to Expand NATO”, Bruce Jackson, was also the director of Lockheed/Martin. US arms dealers Lockheed and Boeing spent $151 million in lobbying congress in 1997-98 to sell more F-16’s and F-18’s to NATO members. 1996-1997 Congress appropriated $30 million in military aid and $647 million in loan guarantees, through the “Central European Defense Loan Fund” for the new NATO members to buy US arms. Czech Republic bought $500 million in arms from US as part of the modernization of it’s military in order to qualify for NATO membership. 1997 Bulgarian arms dealers along with Czech military tried to sell 5 anti stealth fighter systems to Iraq. Before last expansion US arms dealers donate $32.3 million to congress races. Senate passed a resolution in 1998 supporting decisions without consensus. Rumsfeld calls 1972 ABM treaty “ancient history”. 57 major military complexes in Europe cost US $100 Billion a year. NATO is Obsolete The cold war is over, the Soviet Union disbanded, so NATO is obsolete. Missile defense systems and allies to station them are obsolete. The EU is the premier organization in Europe and NATO is not needed. Rumsfeld said the EU “rapid relations force” 60,000 would damage NATO cohesion The NATO charter forbids using force in any manner not consistent with UN charter, which leaves the decision to the UN security council. The EU is already sending a police force to Macedonia, Congo, and Afghanistan. Core of NATO force is 62 ton US tanks that can’t be mobilized quickly. CBO estimates last expansion will cost US $366.61 Million in hidden costs. NATO is Incompetent 5,000 cluster bomblets of the 70,700 dropped, still cover Afghanistan. Human Rights Watch says killings, kidnappings, rapes, protection racketeering, and other abuses are still widespread in Afghanistan. The NATO ally, KLA killed more than 300 Serbs since the end of the Balkan war. 30,000 of the Gypsy minority have been driven out of thier homes in Kosovo. The NATO/KLA atrocities in Kosovo include bombing hospitals, bombing of Aleksinac, Klecka Serb’s massacre and bodies burned in lime factory ovens. Turkey used allies weapons to oppress the Kurdish minority in the mid 1990’s. 31,000 rounds of depleted uranium were used in Kosovo and 18,000 in Bosnia. NATO Expansion is dangerous Iraq obtained anti aircraft rockets and missiles from the Czech Republic in 2002. Admitting Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania constitute a threat to US-Russian relations. Not admitting Russia, Belarus, and Estonia threatens democratization there. Slovakia continues to sell arms to Angola in violation of UN sanctions. In 2000, 26% of Rumanian arms sales were to African countries. Czech Republic sold tanks to Yemen in 2000. Czech Republic was caught by customs shipping arms to Eritrea in 2001. Bulgaria sold tanks to Angola, Ethiopia, Chad, and Uganda after joining NATO. Poland continues to sell tanks to Yemen. Missile Defense Abandonment of the ABM and SALT III treaties will start another arms race. There is no missile threat that could be resolved by the proposed system. The feasibility study by SAIC and Lockheed Martin is a conflict of interest. Placing “defensive” missiles in Turkey is how the Cuban missile crises started.
