Last week, the Colorado Division of Insurance announced they are looking into health insurance premium hikes by Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield in excess of 33% on individual coverage plans, after a marked increase in the number of consumer complaints (Denver Post, 2/25/2010). This comes on the heels of reports that Anthem's parent company has raised rates by almost 40% in other states.

The cost of health care is spiraling out of control and threatening the economy.Sign our petition to state and federal lawmakers, telling them to get serious about protecting the public interest by passing health reform now.

A "sweetheart" deal working its way through Congress could allow a single corporation, Sealaska, to clearcut some of the best, oldest, most biologically-rich areas left in America's Rainforest, the Tongass National Forest in Alaska.

Please tell Congress to stop expanded logging in the Tongass.

Alaska Senator Murkowski and North Dakota Congressman Pomeroy are moving to gut the Clean Air Act's ability to address carbon pollution. They want to reverse the EPA's historic finding that greenhouse gas pollution endangers public health so that the agency won't be able to use the Clean Air Act to curb global warming. The EPA's finding, years in the making and the result of a Supreme Court decision, is the first step in actually implementing the Clean Air Act to control greenhouse gas pollution.

Please send a letter to your senator today asking them to protect the Clean Air Act.

More than 22,000 mercenaries are operating in Iraq and Afghanistan, and these unaccountable hired guns have shot civilians and participated in torture at Abu Ghraib and other detention facilities.

The Stop Outsourcing Security Act, just introduced by Rep. Jan Schakowsky, would prohibit hiring private mercenaries like Blackwater to perform tasks traditionally done by the military.

Please urge your representative to co-sponsor the Stop Outsourcing Our Security Act.

On March 9th, the insurance industry's lobbyist front group is coming back to DC to defend their criminal health care system and plot to kill health reform.

Sometimes it's not enough just to rally. Sometimes you have to take direct action.

We are gathering a people's posse to stage a mass citizen's arrest and hold the insurance companies accountable for their crimes against Americans' health - and demand that Congress passes reform that works for us now.

Can you join us? You can join us in person in DC or from home online. Click here to find out how you can help!

Color of Change

Last week, President Obama gave Republicans one last chance to cooperate on health care reform. They said no.

Now Senate Democrats are moving forward alone -- it's the right thing to do.

The public wants Congress to pass the popular public health insurance option,1 which would force insurance companies to compete and drive down costs. A majority of ColorOfChange members like you recently told us that their top priority is improving access to quality and affordable health care. The public option is one of the best ways to reach that goal.

As of yesterday, 30 senators have committed to voting "yes" on a public option2 -- but we need to reach 51 votes.

At least one of your senators hasn't said if they'll vote for a public option. Can you call today and ask them to support it? Click here to get started:

the National Marine Fisheries Service has proposed to protect more than 70,000 square miles of ocean waters off the coasts of California, Oregon, and Washington as "critical habitat" for the endangered Pacific leatherback sea turtle. This proposal is the first-ever to designate open ocean critical habitat for sea turtles in the continental United States and it represents a major step forward in pulling this majestic species back from the brink of extinction. But more needs to be done if we're to save leatherbacks.
Please take action today to tell the Fisheries Service to strengthen its proposed critical habitat protection by addressing fishing gear as well as including all necessary migratory and feeding areas.

Wake up Wal-Mart
Walmarts sick leave policy is hurting Walmart workers and customers.

Last fall during the height of the H1N1 outbreak, Walmart was exposed for its track record of giving employees "demerits" that can lead to termination when they call in sick. (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/03/business/03sick.html)

Since then Wake Up Walmart has joined a coalition of advocacy groups, including MomsRising.org and the Labor Project for Working Families, to bring attention to Walmart’s sick day policy.

On Wednesday, February 24th we will join with this coalition to bring the message directly to Walmart.

Please join us in giving Walmart a Demerit and let them know that their sick leave policy is unfair to worker and customers alike.

Thank you,

If the final health care reform bill doesn't include a public option, it'll be because of conservative Senate Democrats like Blanche Lincoln.

After taking more than $700,000 from Big Insurance and HMO interests, she was one of just a handful of senators who vowed to filibuster health care reform until the public option was removed—and just Friday, she denounced it again.1

But now we've got a huge opportunity to replace her, and to send a powerful message to Washington that obstructing progressive legislation has heavy political costs.

She's up for reelection this year, and Bill Halter, the state's progressive lieutenant governor, is deciding right now whether to challenge her in the Democratic primary.2 Can you sign our petition to Bill Halter telling him we'll have his back if he decides to run?

Imagine if every single phone line, fax machine, email inbox, and social network page of every senator was flooded with a simple message simultaneously: It's time to stop stalling and get real health care reform done now.

Well, that's exactly what's going to happen next week. On February 24th, together with allies from labor unions, progressive blogs, Health Care for America Now, and others, we're organizing a massive day of action: the Virtual March for Real Health Care Reform.

We're aiming to send one million messages (!!) to Congress that day. We'll call, fax, email, tweet, blog, Facebook—everything we can think of—to make sure Congress knows voters want health reform this year.

It's going to be huge—and fun. But to make the biggest impact and hit our one million goal, we need as many people involved as possible from coast to coast. Can you sign up today to join the Virtual March? It's simple to sign up—and when you do, we'll automatically send a fax in your name to Sens. Bennet and Udall. the notoriously right-wing Denver Post editorial board came out with an outrageous editorial that slams Senator Michael Bennet for leading the fight to pass the public option through the Senate via reconciliation, which takes only 51 votes.

They claim Senator Bennet has "a tin ear for what most Coloradans and Americans want" but then insinuate he should oppose the public option.

The irony is that a recent Research 2000 Colorado poll of likely voters found that 58% of Coloradans want a public option. Broken down by political party, it's a full 85% of Democrats, 59% of Independents, and 29% of Republicans who support a public option. So even moderate, independent constituents of Senator Bennet's — the ones the Denver Post says he's ignoring — are squarely behind his charge for the public option.

HealthCare for America NOW!

On February 17th, a group of insurance company survivors set out from Philadelphia. Their goal? They're marching to get Congress to pay attention to them and to millions of others across this country who need real health care reform passed and need it now.

On February 24th they will arrive in Washington, DC. On the same day, MoveOn.org is organizing a huge
"virtual march" on Washington. We're helping them out, along with dozens of our partners. We're going to call Congress, fax Congress, email Congress, and do all of the things we know how to do to support these marchers and get Congress to listen to us, not the insurance companies.

As the tragedy in Haiti unfolds, Americans are generously donating millions of dollars to aid organizations.

But when Americans donate to charity with their credit cards, the credit card companies get rich. In some cases they keep 3% of the donation as a "transaction fee," even though that's far more than it costs them to process the donation.

It's outrageous and wrong—and it needs to stop.

Move To Amend

"We the corporations"

On January 21, 2010, with its ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, the Supreme Court ruled that corporations are persons, entitled by the U.S. Constitution to buy elections and run our government. Human beings are people; corporations are legal fictions. The Supreme Court is misguided in principle, and wrong on the law. In a democracy, the people rule.

We Move to Amend.

We, the People of the United States of America, reject the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Citizens United, and move to amend our Constitution to:
  • Firmly establish that money is not speech, and that human beings, not corporations, are persons entitled to constitutional rights.
  • Guarantee the right to vote and to participate, and to have our votes and participation count.
  • Protect local communities, their economies, and democracies against illegitimate "preemption" actions by global, national, and state governments.

In one of the worst decisions in U.S. history, the Supreme Court recently ruled that big corporations have the same First Amendment rights as people. This decision has opened the floodgates to unlimited political spending by big corporations.1

So, we're aiming to send thousands of faxes to members of Congress urging them to close the floodgates of unlimited corporate cash. Can you send a free fax to Senators Michael Bennet and Mark Udall today? Click here to send a fax now:
